Character Role Analysis

Derek Foxe

Technically, Derek Foxe is only an antagonist from Tristram's point of view; to Beatrice-Joanna, he's both lover and "pseudo-husband" (5.1.24). Although she doesn't exactly trust him, she doesn't think of him as an enemy either. Tristram, on the other hand, hates his brother and thinks of him as his deepest and deadliest rival—and hey, considering the fact that Derek schemes to keep Tristram in prison, steal his wife, and get him killed off in the British Army, it's safe to say that he's not wrong.
