Companion
Character Role Analysis
Byron Swain
When we first meet Byron, he is no friend of Whit and Wisty's. They didn't like him when they went to school together, and they certainly don't like him now that he's soldier for the New Order. But once Wisty accidentally transforms Byron into a weasel, she's stuck taking responsibility for him. As they travel together, Byron becomes something like an ally, and by the end of the story, he has changed so much that he apologizes for his role in Whit and Wisty's imprisonment. Mrs. Allgood returns Byron to his human form so he can "watch over" Whit and Wisty. It wasn't a likely path to becoming their faithful companion, but it was the one he took.
Celia
Young love can be tough, but it's especially tough when one person dies and is forced to spend most of her time wandering a cold, dark nightmare-world located in an alternate reality. Back up the truck: Three months ago, Celia and Whit were so happy that their friends were joking about their future kids. Then Celia went missing—and when Whit goes to prison, he finds out she was murdered. He's happy to be reunited with his lost love, but given that she's an insubstantial ghost who can only visit his world for a few minutes at a time, the forecast isn't looking good.
