No, this isn't a terrible new mint-peach bubble gum flavor...though it does tend to leave a bad taste in people's mouths.

Those settlers in Jamestown really should have settled down with all that land-stealing. Tobacco's bad for you anyway.

Description:

Today's lesson is on cranial cartography and meta-cognition. Unfortunately neither has anything to do with developing psychic powers. We were disappointed too.

Welcome to NYU! I'm Violet, NYU's mascot and your official tour guide! [Violet stood outside NYU]

00:10

Let's get right to it. After all, that's the way this city works. We never sleep, and we

00:14

don't mince words.

00:15

We were founded in 1831, and we’re big. 23,000 undergrads and 22,000 grads. [NYU in 1831]

00:22

We’re eclectic and dynamic, and yes, the Olsen Twins once attended school here.

00:27

Yeah, we're not sure if that's a plus or minus for us, either… [Olsen twins stood outside NYU building]

00:29

NYU is located in Greenwich Village, Manhattan.

00:32

That means every single day is filled with vibrant sights…sounds… and truly unique smells.

00:38

And we’re a top-ranked national university. Clocking in at number 32 on US News college

00:43

rankings. That’s more than enough for a Facebook humble-brag. [Facebook post bragging about NYU]

00:47

A lot of people like to single out our law program – top 10 in the country --

00:50

…our Stern School of Business….

00:52

…and our legendary art and film school, Tisch School of the Arts, home to famous directors

00:57

like Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, and M. Night Shamalan.

01:02

Who, in a shocking twist, may one day make another good movie.

01:06

So …what exactly is the NYU experience like? [Man looking excited at NYU]

01:08

Well… it’s shaped by our unique location in the heart of the city. A thriving metropolitan

01:14

environment featuring Washington Square Park and many, many adult uh…businesses. [Lots of censored stores]

01:20

Students mostly live in dorms and apartments spread out through lower Manhattan.

01:24

So don’t expect your traditional campus life filled with trees, lakes, and hackie-sackery. [Boy playing with hackie-sack in a park]

01:29

Instead, students go out and experience the foods, shows, and events of New York City.

01:33

Excitement is just a walk… or a very cramped subway ride away. [Subway rides past]

01:37

We’re also big into sports.

01:38

We’ve got strong Division III programs in track, basketball, fencing, golf, soccer, [Sports athletes appear]

01:42

swimming, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling – phew.

01:45

I got exhausted just listing all of those sports...

01:47

Plus, we’re pretty famous for our unique – “Build your own major” program.

01:51

It’s like a mix and match game for kids. Except instead of blocks… You’re playing with your future. [Baby holding building blocks]

01:56

We also send a lot of students oversees in our exchange program. NYU Abu Dhabi, here

02:02

you come. …Remember to bring sunscreen. [Man stood outside NYU Abu Dhabi]

02:06

And just who is your typical NYU student?

02:08

Well, we’re incredible diverse, although we do tend to draw more women than men: 57

02:13

percent of our study body is the fairer sex. [Woman with her hands in the air]

02:16

We also have a fairly large Orthodox Jewish population. Big enough that there’s a dorm

02:21

with a kosher dining hall.

02:22

Politically, we lean liberal. [A donkey holding a peace sign outside congress building]

02:26

Except of course for our business school. All those vegan protests and socialist sit-ins

02:31

probably don’t sit so well with them.

02:33

In terms of relationships with other schools, NYU’s a bit of a loner. Kind of that eclectic

02:37

arty kid who sits alone, videotaping things and kinda making funny noises. [Girl sitting in an alley alone]

02:42

I mean, yeah, we do have a bit of a competition with Columbia. They might be Ivy League, but…whatever,

02:47

we're much cooler.

02:48

Remember, some of our notable alumni include Aziz Ansari, Kristen Bell, Billy Crystal,

02:54

Angelina Jolie, Woody Allen, and hundreds of cool businessmen, senators, Pulitzer Prize

02:59

winners…heck, even Jonas Salk.

03:01

Yeah, and the Olsen twins were here, I haven't forgotten. You can stop reminding me, Columbia… [Olsen Twins stood outside NYU]

03:05

But c'mon, we’ve been voted the nation’s top “Dream School” more times than we can count.

03:10

So who cares if we don’t have a campus?

03:12

Or that bobcats aren’t remotely purple? [NYU mascot stood by a bobcat]

03:15

Or that maybe the Olson twins got in…

03:17

Come to NYU, and get a truly dynamic, world-class education, while breathing in the sights,

03:21

sounds, and mildly noxious fumes of New York City. [Man wearing a gas mask in New York street]

03:24

…Maybe bring a gas mask.
