Fight Club Questions

Bring on the tough stuff. There’s not just one right answer.

  1. How does the film's structure as basically one giant flashback affect its feel?
  2. The mission of Project Mayhem is to destroy consumer society and reset mankind to square one. Does Project Mayhem accomplish this? What will the world look like at the end of the movie? Where will our Narrator and Marla go after the final scene? Is Tyler truly gone forever?
  3. What scenes in Fight Club are real (within the context of the movie) and which scenes are all in the Narrator's head? How much of Fight Club actually happens?
  4. Why does the Narrator have chronic insomnia? How does it affect him? What could his insomnia be a metaphor for? Helplessness? Repressed anxieties? Too much Starbucks?
  5. Do you think there is really a Starbucks cup in every scene? Whether or not there is, what does the Starbucks saturation add to the movie's themes?
  6. What visual techniques does David Fincher employ to bring the style of the novel and much of the internal dialogue to life?
  7. Were you surprised that the narrator and Tyler Durden are the same person? How does this make you look at the film differently when you rewatch it? What do you notice the second time around?
  8. Why is Marla the only female character in the film (sorry, Chloe, we're ignoring you)? Why isn't there a larger female presence? How would the movie be different if more women were included? If the genders were reversed, would Fight Club be different?
  9. Have you read the book? What changes are made in the jump to the big screen? How do you feel about the changes, and why do you think they were made?
  10. Would you join a fight club or Project Mayhem? Why or why not?
