- As they walk, Nefret tells Zoey that classes run from 8:00PM until 3:00AM, and it's currently 4:00AM. Most campus buildings are open until dawn.
- Nefret's cat, Skylar, jumps into her arms, and Zoey pets him (apparently he doesn't like anyone but Nefret, so that's odd).
- Nefret tells Zoey that cats and vampyres are traditionally allied, and that a cat might choose Zoey, or might not.
- Every High Priestess has an affinity or two (basically like mutant powers) from the Goddess. Nefret has an affinity (or bond) with all cats, plus she has the power to heal. Two affinities—not too shabby.
- Nefret tells Zoey more about the school (they have classes at night because sunlight is uncomfortable for vampyres, not because it makes them explode like in myth); Zoey feels weird and awkward, and she keeps apologizing for stuff.
- Finally Nefret tells Zoey that this is a huge change for everyone it happens to, and that everything will be okay—after all, Zoey's Mark is proof that Nyx has chosen her.
- Nefret's phone rings and she finds out she has to go check on a patient. She tells Zoey to keep walking until she reaches the main door.
- Zoey is spooked at being alone, and then she accidentally sees two people in an alcove: a girl and a guy, and the girl is trying to give the guy a blowjob but he keeps pushing her away.
- She scratches him until he bleeds and says that they'll always be together, while he says that actually things are over between them.
- The guy sees Zoey, but she rushes off until she finds the doors Nefret described. Almost witnessing a blowjob was pretty weird but the blood has made Zoey feel almost aroused.
- Nefret meets Zoey there and brings her around the campus, noting that it used to be a monastery, and then a private prep school. Zoey notices that all the adult vampyres they see are gorgeous, and most of the fledglings aren't bad-looking either. All of them stare at her, because of her completed Mark.
