War and Peace Volume 1, Part 1, Chapter 8 Summary

  • Just when the Karagins’ visit seems like it’s winding down, a bunch of teenagers burst into the room. The Rostovs pretend to be serious, but both are clearly indulgent parents and are super sweet with their daughter Natasha.
  • She’s playing with an old doll, laughing about how beat up it is.
  • Her brother Nikolai is sort of ill at ease, but Boris immediately makes a joke about having known the doll for a while.
  • The kids run off, and Boris gets his mother a carriage.
