War and Peace Volume 4, Part 3, Chapter 5 Summary

  • Denisov and his men ride out through a field near a river to the place where the French are camped and are trying to scope out the scene.
  • The captured French drummer boy doesn’t have any useful info for Denisov's guerilla band, so they kind of hang out and watch for a while. Then a shot is fired.
  • It’s Denisov’s scout, Tikhon, who got sent ahead and is now running across the river away from the French. He makes it and rejoins the party.
  • Turns out he’s the MVP of Denisov’s little group. He’s basically a one-man forestry team, doing all the dirty work of being out in the woods and being an awesome axe wielder. For a while they also use him to bring in prisoners, but after he gets shot at, he...um...doesn’t take prisoners any more (hint, hint). Don’t get it? No worries, Petya doesn’t either. Basically, he just kills every French soldier he comes across.
