Average dive score: 5–6.5. Degree of difficulty: 1.5–2.0. GPA: 2.5.

It sure is a good thing you always focused on the "student" part of being a student-athlete. For you, diving was just a passion, never a likely career. You're onto the more complex dives, but you're not all that great at them. That's okay—you always liked numbers more, anyway.

Average dive score: 6.5–7. Degree of difficulty: 1.5–2.0. GPA: 4.0.

You enjoy diving and you definitely have some talent, but not on the professional level. Congrats on that GPA, though. You were always more of a student than an athlete anyway.

Average dive score: 7–8. Degree of difficulty: 2.0–2.5. GPA: 2.0–3.0.

Everyone's told you that you're really good…for an amateur. Your scores are just a little subpar, and the dives aren't even that difficult. You should definitely become a member of USA Diving and have a career in coaching.

Average dive score: 8–8.5. Degree of difficulty: GPA: 2.5–3.0.

You're kind of at a crossroads. The World Championships and Olympics remain a possibility—albeit, a distant one. Unfortunately, that means lots of training and constant trials, so you'll have to put the rest of your life on hold for a while with no guarantee. Sounds risky. Maybe you should ask your friend that's headed to Wall Street.

Average dive score: 9–10. Degree of difficulty: 3.5–3.7. GPA: 3.5+.

You have a bronze medal already? Most people only leave college with a diploma or two. (You did get one of those, too, right?). Eh, it might not matter—Speedo and the Olympic Committee are all over you.

Summary:

Ever hear the phrase, "one in a million"? Well, you'll need to be exactly that if you want to go pro. Think about the best high school athlete in your district of 10 high schools. The absolute Big Man in the area. He gets headhunted so hard by colleges that he can barely spare time for his school work, let alone friends. Then, he gets into college and is a total all star there...of the 12 best all stars on his team that year. Well, guess, what? Only one of those guys will be a pro in five years...if this is a top class of athletes out of the the past several years.

So, even if you're in the 95th percentile of all NCAA athletes in your sport, you've still got a snowball's chance in a microwave of going pro. Not to mention actually mattering at all. More than likely, you'll still be struggling to eke out a living on the bench for a year or stuck on a farm team until you're forced to look for other work. We could bludgeon you with more data and stats, but as you dream about success, just make sure you're hedging your bets.

In other words: enjoy that "alternative" career, Shmooper. (#realtalk)
