Scholarship Qualifications
Just making it onto the dive team is difficult enough, but actually getting a scholarship means getting tens across the board in what prospective coaches are looking for. Only Divisions I and II offer scholarships for diving, and since schools have a finite number of athletic scholarships to give, there certainly aren't many of them.
There are 135 diving teams for men in Division I with an average roster size of 29…and only 9.9 scholarships per team are offered (source). Women have a bit more of an opportunity with 197 teams in Division I offering 14 scholarships each, but the odds of getting one still aren't high.
Chances of getting a scholarship from a team in Division II are even grimmer. Men have 66 teams with an average size of 20 people, but only 8.1 scholarships are awarded to each team. On the women's side, there are 89 teams with an average of 18 divers each, but they have the same 8.1 scholarship limit as men (source).
Being talented enough to get a diving scholarship isn't exactly a golden ticket, either. The average amount awarded to men in Division I is just under $15,000, while women get $15,500 (source). That's not nearly enough to fund an entire college tuition. Not in this economy, bro.
Your chances of making the team in Division II may be higher, but those programs have fewer scholarships to offer with much less money in each (source). Boo.
So yeah, banking on a diving scholarship to fund your entire college education is definitely not a wise decision. If only we could all go back to high school.
