Young Adult Literature; Coming-of-Age
Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging is young adult lit through and through. It's written as the diary of a fourteen-year-old girl, and fourteen-year-olds should have absolutely no trouble relating to it. It's filled with embarrassing family moments, questions about growing up, romantic yearnings, and pretty much everything else your average early teen navigates and thinks about. And since a teen tells the story, the language and plot never get fancy or super complicated either.
At its heart, this book is about coming of age. Georgia is growing up, trying to figure out who she is both within her family and out in the world. Is she an adult by the time this book ends? Absolutely not—our girl has loads more to learn (check out the "Symbolism, Imagery, Allegory" section to read up on this)—but she's also definitely on her way. And since there are nine more books in the series, we're thinking she probably finishes the journey by the time the last book wraps. Fingers crossed.
