• While driving to a hospital and then to his daughter's house late one night, Lefty pulls over when he sees Bud walking along the highway toward Owosso.
• Lefty calls out for Bud and offers him food in order to get him to come out of the bushes.
• When Bud asks for the food, Lefty makes him a deal: he'll give Bud the food if Bud tells him what he's doing out in the middle of nowhere. Bud lies, of course, and says he is running away from his dad's house in Grand Rapids.
• Lefty scoops Bud up into his car. However, just when they are about to get in, Bud freaks out when he sees a box labeled "blood" in the seat. He thinks that Lefty is a vampire.
• When Bud takes off in his car, Lefty just runs hard after the car, then taps on the window to get Bud to talk to him.
• When Bud asks to see his teeth, Lefty shows him. No vampires here. Finally, they get on the road, and Bud falls asleep.
• The next morning, Lefty and his daughter, Mrs. Sleet, talk about Herman Calloway and how beat-up poor Bud looks. Bud pretends to sleep.
• When Bud wakes up, Lefty teases him a bit and goes to the kitchen with Mrs. Sleet to finish making breakfast.
• During breakfast, Lefty teases everyone, and we learn that he is a redcap.
• On the way to Grand Rapids, Lefty makes a few stops. First, he picks up a mysterious little box. Then Lefty gets pulled over by a cop, who questioned him about labor organizing and unions. Lefty denies any involvement.
• In the car, however, Lefty reveals to Bud that he was helping out with union negotiations and explains that unions are like families.
• Lefty drives Bud to the club and waits for him in the car while Bud supposedly checks in with his dad. Lefty trusts Bud.
• Lefty takes off for home.
