La sra. Joe es la hermana bastante mayor de Pip, y vaya, reúne en una sola persona las peores cualidades de cada una de las hermanas mayores: no solamente le recuerda constantemente que fue ella quien lo crio a mano (1), sino que también cree en el castigo corporal –y mucho. Incluso tiene un instrumento de tortura favorito llamado Tickler, una vara con una punta de cera.

Como con la mayoría de personajes secundarios, nos damos una buena idea a partir de su primera descripción:

My sister, Mrs. Joe, with black hair and eyes, had such a prevailing redness of skin that I sometimes used to wonder whether it was possible she washed herself with a nutmeg-grater instead of soap. She was tall and bony, and almost always wore a coarse apron, fastened over her figure behind with two loops, and having a square impregnable bib in front, that was stuck full of pins and needles. She made it a powerful merit in herself, and a strong reproach against Joe, that she wore this apron so much. Though I really see no reason why she should have worn it at all; or why, if she did wear it at all, she should not have taken it off, every day of her life. (3)

Inaccesible, dura, resentida y amargada. Esa es la sra. Joe. No sabemos nada de ella, como por qué es tan cruel (aunque haber tenido que criar a su hermano menor puede haber tenido algo que ver con eso) o por qué ella quería incluso casarse con Joe en primer lugar, pero sí sabemos que ella es responsable de ayudar a formar el carácter de Pip. Ella lo hace sensible:

I had known, from the time when I could speak, that my sister, in her capricious and violent coercion, was unjust to me […] Through all my punishments, disgraces, fasts, and vigils, and other penitential performances, I had nursed this assurance; and to my communing so much with it, in a solitary and unprotected way, I in great part refer the fact that I was morally timid and very sensitive. (8.95)

En otras palabras, la sra. Joe es en parte responsable de hacer que Pip sea tan susceptible a la crueldad de Estella. Tal vez si hubiese sido más amable, si hubiese hecho que Pip se sintiera realmente parte de la familia y que valía algo siquiera, la actitud alturada de Estella nunca lo habría herido.
