Character Analysis
Hermione's the brains of the whole operation: she's the kind of student who gets peeved if she gets an A rather than an A+, the kind of kid who's idea of "downtime" is "putting more extracurriculars on her resume," and the kind of friend we'd always want on our Trivial Pursuit team.
She's also a little big of a show-off…but that comes with the braniac territory. She definitely doesn't shy away from pointing out when others are wrong about something. Take when Ron's brothers, Fred and George, are plotting to get past the age line around the Goblet of Fire:
GEORGE: Cooked it up just this morning.
HERMIONE: It's not going to work.
GEORGE: Oh, yeah? And why is that, Granger?
HERMIONE: You see this? This is an Age Line. Dumbledore drew it himself.
GEORGE: So?
HERMIONE: So, a genius like Dumbledore couldn't possibly be fooled by a dodge as pathetically dimwitted as an aging potion.
Sure, she comes off as a little bit of a know-it-all here…but she's right. Fred and George end up being turned into old men when Dumbledore's "genius" age line backfires on them.
Love Is In The Air…
Like basically all the kids in her year, Hermione is dipping her toe in the complicated and often dicey world of romance.
Yup, that's right, Hermione gets a fella this year: the Quidditch star Viktor Krum, who visits Hogwarts to compete in the Triwizard Tournament. He's not exactly the kind of guy we would have pictured Hermione with, since he's more about brawn than brains. As Hermione says herself:
HERMIONE: Actually, we don't really talk at all. Viktor's more of a physical being.
Well, uh, there's more to life than books, we guess? In any case, they're very nice and respectful toward each other, and we know Hermione is too smart to choose a dud…so, we suppose we approve?
A Caveat
Okay, though: before we dive too far into Krum-Hermione 'shipping, we have to mention just one teeny problem: Ron. Ron get super tweaky about the fact that Hermione and Krum are dating, and Hermione—even though she's dating Krum already—basically tells Ron that he should have manned up and asked her out to the Yule Ball:
HERMIONE: Next time there's a ball, pluck up the courage and ask me before somebody else does! And not as a last resort.
We're guessing if she's telling Ron to ask her out, she doesn't think he's disgusting…right? Hmm, wonder where that's going.
So, while there's not tons going on with Hermione's character in this film, we definitely get a glimpse of her struggling with the kind of hormone-fueled angst that's afflicting, well, pretty much everyone in Harry's immediate circle. Now we just have to wait and see if she and Ron are getting on the true love express.
