Character Role Analysis
Mrs. Washington
In Alabama, Hà probably could not have found a cooler lady than Mrs. Washington to teach her English. Her neighbor teaches Hà more than English, though; she also teaches her that she is valuable and has every right to live normally in America. Mrs. Washington stands up for Hà at school, laughs with her, and comforts her when she is sad, so not only is she one of the first people to actually make Hà feel welcome in the community, but she becomes a true blue friend, too.
