Annabel Greene Timeline and Summary

  • Annabel goes to school for her first day of junior year, and is immediately insulted and shunned by her former best friend Sophie. Ouch.
  • At lunchtime Annabel sits on the wall close to a kid named Owen Armstrong, who is also kind of a loner. Her best friend from childhood, Clarke Reynolds, is sitting on the wall but gets up and leaves as soon as she sees Annabel. Guess they're not friends anymore.
  • When Annabel gets home her mother convinces her to go to another modeling gig—she doesn't want to model anymore, but is afraid to tell her mom because she doesn't want to trigger her depression.
  • Annabel's sister Whitney is in the car but doesn't talk to Annabel. She doesn't seem to like her that much.
  • One day Whitney drives Annabel to school and is supposed to pick her up. When Annabel walks into the parking lot, she runs into Sophie's boyfriend, Will Cash, and immediately panics.
  • He talks to Annabel and Sophie swoops in to start hurling insults at Annabel. Annabel pushes Sophie and runs across campus to throw up in the grass.
  • Owen comes up to her and comforts her, even though they've never talked before. Annabel's mom calls to tell her that Whitney won't be picking her up—so Owen offers to drive her home.
  • They stop by the middle school to pick up Owen's sister Mallory, who is a big fan of Annabel's modeling work. They also swing by the local radio station where Owen has a Sunday morning show, and Annabel meets his best friend, Rolly.
  • Annabel and Owen start hanging out at lunch and arguing about music. With Owen she can be a little more honest about her opinions without being afraid of hurting his feelings.
  • When their parents leave for a vacation, Annabel stays home with Whitney. Whitney has just started seeing a new therapist and is skeptical of her methods.
  • Even though they don't really talk, the sisters eat pizza and get along—Annabel even admits to Whitney that she and Sophie aren't friends anymore.
  • After his radio show on Sunday morning, Owen picks up Annabel and they go out to breakfast with Rolly. She finds out that Rolly is in love with some girl who attacked him in self-defense class, and that he saw her once but didn't make a move.
  • Afterward she goes home and hangs out with Whitney—they even decide to make dinner together. She finds Owen's iPod in his jacket pocket (that she borrowed) and decides to drop by his house after dinner to give it to him.
  • At Owen's house she runs into Mallory and all of her friends who are excitedly pretending to be models; Annabel helps them dress up… and she and Owen almost kiss.
  • After Mrs. Greene gets back from vacation she's more focused on Annabel's modeling than ever, especially with the upcoming fall fashion show.
  • Annabel starts going to more rehearsals even though she hates it and has to see her old friend Emily, who is now Sophie's best friend. They don't talk anymore.
  • Owen picks Annabel up from rehearsal one day and they go through the car wash together to listen to some music. Finally they kiss.
  • At the fall fashion show, Annabel hears that Emily hooked up with Will Cash. This brings back a rush of emotions and reveals that Annabel was raped by Will Cash over the summer—that's why she and Sophie had a falling out.
  • When she looks at Emily she can tell that she knows that Annabel was raped too. Annabel goes out on the catwalk and sees Whitney looking up at her sadly.
  • After the fashion show Annabel goes to the club where she promised to meet Owen—where Rolly spots the girl he's in love with, and Annabel realizes that it's Clarke and introduces them.
  • Because Emily's rape is on her mind, Annabel runs out of the club without telling Owen and drives back home.
  • After the incident at the club Annabel and Owen stop talking, and the next couple months at school are pretty lonely—even though things are better at home because Whitney is recovering.
  • Before they go on break for the holidays, Annabel hears that Emily pressed charges against Will. Emily then corners Annabel in the library the day before Christmas break to ask her if she'll testify at his upcoming trial.
  • When Emily leaves her alone, Annabel starts crying. Later in the bathroom Clarke tells Annabel that she doesn't hate her, and says that she'll be there for her if she needs someone to talk to—she also tells Annabel that Owen is worried about her.
  • Kristen comes home for Christmas break and all the sisters go out to a coffee shop with Whitney to see her read an essay about being the middle sister and the day that she broke her arm.
  • When they get home they watch Kristen's film for her college class, which is also about the day that Whitney broke her arm.
  • When Annabel hears Owen's show the next morning, she knows what she has to do. She drives to the station and tells him everything—about her rape, her family problems, and why she's been avoiding him.
  • Owen is supportive, and when Annabel gets home she calls Emily's lawyer and agrees to testify at Will Cash's trial the following day. She tells her entire family what happened as well.
  • The next day Annabel goes to testify against Will Cash and sees that he has a black eye. Owen shows up after the trial and says that he's in trouble for punching Will; she kisses him.
  • A couple weeks later Annabel is covering for Owen at the radio station because he's grounded. She has created her own radio show and quit modeling. She and Clarke are better friends now.
  • Her whole life has gotten a lot better.
