Character Analysis
Clarke Reynolds is a casualty of Annabel's relationship with Sophie. Clarke used to be Annabel's best friend when they were kids, but Annabel ditched her for Sophie and they haven't talked since. All this time Annabel assumes that Clarke totally hates her with a fiery passion, so she avoids her. When she runs into Clarke at a local club though, she finds out that Clarke doesn't hate her at all. Later Clarke explains that all this time she's just felt hurt and abandoned:
"You hurt my feelings," she said. "God, Annabel. We were best friends and you totally dumped me. How did you expect me to feel?" (16.45)
Annabel realizes that she sometimes makes assumptions about how people feel toward her without truly asking. After they start talking again, Clarke reaches out to Annabel and tells her to call her if she needs anything. That's what a true friend would do—unlike snotty, cruel Sophie.
By the end Clarke is dating Rolly (Owen's best friend) and she and Annabel are cautiously working on their friendship again. It's a real friendship, without games, manipulation, or jealousy. They just like to be around each other, which is a much healthier—and happier—kind of relationship.
