Character Analysis
Will Cash is a real snake of a character. Sophie may think that he's a catch of a boyfriend, but in fact he's a dangerous jerk. Both Annabel and Emily find out about his true character the hard way.
Rich Boy With a Dark Side
Will Cash is a rich boy who attends the local private school. He's attractive and kind of alternative—a lot of girls like him, which means Sophie is absolutely thrilled when he becomes her boyfriend. As a rich popular kid, he throws a lot of parties and lives a life of excess. On the outside he seems like a dreamboat—but there's something about him that always makes Annabel uncomfortable:
Will was good looking and incredibly popular. But he was also hard to read, the kind of guy who is just attractive enough that a warm personality is almost required to make him approachable. Will didn't have that. (6.64)
Living Without Consequences
Because he grows up in a life of privilege, Will lives his life like there are no consequences. He acts rashly—partying hard, cheating on Sophie regularly, and chasing down other girls. But his aren't just privileged teenage boy antics—he sexually assaults girls, which is truly terrible. He rapes Annabel, but it's only after Emily comes clean about the fact that he raped her too that the truth comes out. It seems Will Cash has done this many times before:
"Yeah. There were rumors when he was at Perkins Day, apparently. You know, girls who said similar stuff had happened to them." (15.55)
Although Will acts like he's just going to get off because his daddy hires him a big shot lawyer, he's eventually taken down when all the girls who he's assaulted decide to come forward to testify at his trial. All of his bad behavior catches up with him and he gets punished… just like he deserves.
