- As Jim walks out to the dance floor with Christine, she asks him what's the matter with Carol Goldsmith.
- He knows exactly what the matter is, but doesn't tell (although at this point, we're all like "Just tell Christine that Bertrand cheats on her!")
- It turns out that Christine knows that Bertrand was supposed to take Carol to the dance instead of her. For a while, she and Jim dance in silence.
- Finally, Jim decides to open the conversation by thanking her for playing along with his lie about being a reporter who called Bertrand. (Take note, readers. That's how you wedge yourself between a person and their girlfriend/boyfriend).
- Christine, though, doesn't want to talk about it. Jim's disappointed because he wants her to share in a joke at Bertrand's expense.
- But after some prodding, she admits that she thought the whole newspaper thing was really funny. She feels disloyal for laughing at Bertrand behind his back.
- They both start to realize that their dancing isn't very good. Christine says it's because Jim's too far away, and tells him to take hold of her and to dance more closely.
- Jim pretty much loses his mind with sexual energy when they dance closely.
- As they continue, Christine asks how things are going with Professor Welch.
- She says she's surprised that Welch isn't angry with Jim for asking Atkinson to make a phony phone call to get him away from the Welches' arty weekend.
- Jim goes completely stiff. How in the world do people know that the phone call was a fake? Christine tells him that Evan Johns overheard him discussing it with Atkinson back at their house, and told Welch about it right after Jim left.
- Christine doesn't think very highly of Johns for doing this, which makes Jim happy.
- When the dance is over, Jim thanks Christine for the dance, and she says she enjoyed it very much.
- At this point, Jim is actually surprised that he's not angrier at Johns. He figures that it must be because he's been having such a good time with Christine.
- When Christine has backed away, Jim glances across the room to find Carol Goldsmith marching up to him.
- She grabs him by the wrist and tells him to come and dance with her. She seems really drunk.
