- Running to Christine, Jim explains how he's got the job that Bertrand was going for, and that he'll be moving to London.
- Christine tells him that she knows about Bertrand's affair with Carol Goldsmith, and that she (Christine) and Bertrand are finished.
- So all's right in the world.
- Jim and Christine decide that they're going to give dating each other a try. They also decide to go grab some food at a restaurant.
- On their way to the restaurant, they pass the Welches' car.
- At this moment, the entire Welch family comes walking out of a restaurant, and they all see Jim with Christine on his arm.
- Jim notices that Bertrand and Professor Welch have switched hats, with Welch wearing Bertrand's beret and Bertrand wearing Welch's fishing hat.
- Jim is about to say something to them, but instead, he bursts into laughter at the entire Welch family: Professor Welch, Mrs. Welch, Bertrand, and even the brother named Michel whom Jim has never met.
- Christine leads Jim away by the arm, but he can't stop laughing.
- Things have just completely worked out for him, no matter how hard he might have worked to mess things up.
- Maybe that's why the book's called Lucky Jim.
