Foil
Character Role Analysis
Lucy and Peggy
Sometimes we have to do a little detective work to figure out which pair of characters is opposite enough to be considered a foil. In this novel, though, Lucy does the work for us by coming out and telling us just how different she and Peggy are.
While Lucy makes her living as Mary Poppins, Peggy hates kids. Whereas Lucy would love to spend an afternoon at a museum, Peggy would rather spend the afternoon hating museums. Yeah, Peggy is kind of a hater. But her bad attitude helps us to recognize that, while Lucy may not always be a ray of sunshine, she has nowhere near the level of negativity that Peggy does.
