Pan's Labyrinth Scene 9 Summary

  • As the men ride out, Ofelia takes off her dress and crawls into the heart of an old, giant fig tree.
  • The book tells her that a toad lives in the tree and keeps it from thriving. She must place three stones from the small bag in its mouth and take the golden key from its belly.
  • The tree is really muddy and filled with bugs. It's also a lot bigger than it looks from the outside.
  • Meanwhile, the soldiers (led by Vidal) find the remains of the fire they saw.
  • Vidal realizes the rebels are still close by and taunts them with the antibiotics and lottery ticket they left behind.
  • As the soldiers leave we see the rebels emerge: a bunch of scrawny-looking young men.
