Character Analysis

When Victor goes on his paper route, he's struck by the sight of a boy in one of the houses who is constantly glued to the TV… with the sound is off. Victor judges the kid at first and assumes that he is just obsessed with television to the point of refusing to participate in everyday life.

But on the last day of his paper route, Victor learns that the boy is deaf and that he's actually watching TV in order to learn how to read lips. Victor sympathizes with the boy who has problems communicating just like him, and ends up befriending him. In the end, Victor befriends TV Boy and learns how to use sign language—it's an easier way for Victor to communicate, too, after all, since he doesn't have to worry about stuttering when he's using his hands to talk. And with that, we see Victor befriend someone who has something major in common with him. Aw.
