The Canterbury Tales: The Pardoner's Tale Lines 515 – 560 Summary

  • The guy who spoke brings the straws and everyone draws.
  • The youngest one pulls the short straw and heads into town right away.
  • As soon as he's gone, one of two left says to the other "You know we're sworn brothers, right? I have a sweet deal for you.
  • Our friend's gone to town, and there's plenty of gold to split among the three of us.
  • But what would you think if I could fix it so it only had to be split two ways? Wouldn't that be a huge favor?"
  • The other answers, "How can you do that? He knows that the gold is here with the two of us. What can we say to him?'
  • "Can you keep it zipped?" says his friend. "I'll let you in on my plan. Piece of cake."
  • "I won't say a word," says the other.
  • "Now," says the first, "There's two of us, and two are stronger than one.
  • As soon as he gets back from town and sits down, get up as though you want to wrestle with him, and I'll stab him in the side while you wrestle.
  • You do the same with your dagger, and then all this gold will be divided just between me and you. Problem solved.
  • Then we can have it all and gamble as much as we want."
  • And so these two evil men agree to kill the third, just like I told you.
