- Sabriel wakes up at the bottom of the sinkhole, having been knocked out by the crash. Mogget, in his true form, slowed them before they hit bottom though, so she's not hurt. The Paperwing is destroyed, however, and Mogget is missing.
- Mogget reappears as a "blazing, blue-white creature" (12.16), now bent on destroying Sabriel, even though he saved them. Sabriel's sword is no use against Mogget and she's too panicked to think of any spells.
- Mogget reveals that he's been bound to serve generations of Abhorsen for millennia, trapped in the form of a cat. Hmm, maybe he's got a good reason to be angry?
- Just as the terrifying Mogget is about to murder Sabriel in a really unpleasant way, she remembers the ring—it has expanded to the size of Mogget's neck. Sabriel slides the enlarged ring over Mogget's head and it traps Mogget, shrinking and transforming him. Sabriel rings the Saraneth bell and the change is complete—now a cat once more, Mogget coughs up the original ring and goes to sleep. Talk about a high-maintenance pet.
