- On the way out of the city, Sabriel's group runs into a band of scavengers also leaving the safety of the protected part of Belisaere, searching for loot among the ruins. They have a group of kids in tow, used as "decoys, or bait, for the Dead" (20.8).
- Sabriel senses that the Dead outside the city are numerous but weak. They make it to the caves, then make their way into a large underground hall filled waist-deep with water.
- The two broken Great Charter stones make Sabriel and Touchstone feel sick. After wading a ways into the reservoir, Sabriel spots a faint glow—it's coming from a diamond-shaped protective spell cast by her father, whose body is still standing in the diamond covered in ice.
