- As they navigate to the West Yard, Sabriel remarks that Touchstone never said he was a prince. He denies he is, although his mother was the Queen.
- They run up the hill to where the Clayr and the Paperwing await, but a scavenger shoots Sabriel with an arrow as they flee. Touchstone retaliates, then picks her up and goes crazy—literally. He goes into a berserk state, foaming at the mouth and sprinting with her in his arms until they reach the Paperwing. When they get there, he collapses, eyes rolling back in his head.
- Twin blonde, blue-eyed women are waiting for them—they introduce themselves as the Clayr and comment that Sabriel and Touchstone must be "the Abhorsen and the King" (24.36).
- The Clayr speak in a strange, cryptic fashion, saying that they have "only been allowed to be the Clayr today" (24.44) because they're the best Paperwing pilots; they identify themselves as Ryelle and Sanaar.
- Ryelle pours water from a bottle into the air and Sanaar freezes it into a windowpane with a wand. The ice-window serves as a magic television screen, showing locations in Ancelstierre that Sabriel recognizes. The screen shows the spot Kerrigor's body is buried, quite close to Sabriel's alma mater, Wyverley College, and it also projects an image of Abhorsen's death at Kerrigor's hands.
- As the Clayr strap Touchstone into the Paperwing, it becomes clear that they are visionaries, and have channeled the power of their bloodline into giving Sabriel these images.
- Sabriel takes off in the Paperwing for Ancelstierre, to find and destroy Kerrigor's body.
