Gibarian

Gibarian was Kelvin's teacher in school, and he's still sort of his mentor, even though he's dead. He does come back in a dream and give some cryptic advice about how Snow and Sartorius are plotting against Kelvin (see the beginning of Chapter 9), but it doesn't really go anywhere, and anyway Snow and Sartorius are successful.

Part of the reason Kelvin is such a flat protagonist is perhaps that Gibarian is such a flat mentor. He starts out dead, and even when he comes back from the dead he's pretty useless. So there you go: It's all Gibarian's fault.
