How It All Goes Down
- Captain Andrew Henry is standing above a beautiful valley, but all he can think about is that fact that there aren't any horses around. Huh?
- Oh, we get it—he's arrived at Fort Union. He had been here about "eight weeks ago" after the battle with the Arikara and had given specific instructions to his men to "guard the horses at all costs" (1.12.4).
- As Henry learns from a man named Stubby Bill, those horses were stolen by Blackfeet Indians and they've been holed up ever since.
- Meanwhile, Jim Bridger is sleeping. He has a strange nightmare in which he's stabbed by a fearsome specter with scars all over his face. We think you can guess who that is.
