One way we know Victor is the novel's antagonist is by the fact that he's a crazed serial killer. (Bit of a giveaway, that.) Still, it takes Sym a long time to realize it; she spends the better part of the book thinking Victor is her friend and protector, when in fact he is precisely the opposite. Victor is the author of pretty much every bad thing that has happened in Sym's life: her hearing loss, her father's death, and her plight in Antarctica. So yeah—he's basically the worst antagonist ever.
