Titus Oates

Titus, Sym's beloved friend and father figure, guides her toward many important realizations over the course of the book. Of course, since Titus is an imaginary friend (as opposed to a real flesh-and-blood one), Sym is really functioning as her own guide… at least mostly. There's some ambiguity surrounding Titus's final and most important act of guidance, when he helps Sym find shelter during a critical moment. (Check out his page in the "Characters" section for more deets.) That Titus may have been the genuine article, depending on whether or not you're inclined to believe in the supernatural.
