Sigurd Bruch

Sym's romantic interest, Sigurd Bruch, isn't exactly Prince Charming. He's a con man who pretends to be interested in (and eventually in love with) Sym for his own personal gain. Sym is disappointed, if not entirely surprised, when she discovers his ruse. What's interesting is that she wasn't all that into him, anyway. Sure, she makes out with him (rather a lot, actually). But when they kiss, Sym often finds her thoughts drifting—and she recognizes that's a little bit weird. "I'm not sure kissing ought to be a thinking kind of pastime" (10.58), she tells us. Good instinct.
