John Howard Parnell

Character Analysis

John Howard was the brother of the famous Charles Stewart Parnell. In 1904, he was the city marshal of Dublin and registrar of pawnbrokers. Bloom sees him wandering the streets in "Lestrygonians," and later, in "The Wandering Rocks," Boylan and Haines see Parnell playing chess against himself. In "Circe," Bloom imagines himself named the leader of the new Bloomusalem, and Parnell comes up and tells Bloom that he is the greatest Irishman since Charles Stewart.
