Nurse Callan and Nurse Quigley

Character Analysis

Callan and Quigley are nurses in the National Maternity Hospital. In "Oxen of the Sun," the women are made to correspond to Lamote and Phaethusa, daughters of the sun god Helios. They both come in to shush the men several times, and Callan later tells the medical student Dixon that Mina Purefoy has given birth. The men find Callan very attractive. At the end of the episode, when Bloom asks Callan to pass his regards on to Mrs. Purefoy, he also can't help but ask her when she too will become pregnant.
