The writing in We Were Liars is sparse and poetic, but the plot is intricate, full of twists and turns. This is one of those books where you hit the last page, say, "Wait, what?" and start over.
The second time around, you'll catch details that probably didn't stand out the first time—things like Gat's old t-shirt, Cadence's height, and the fact that Johnny receives the scarf in the mail (or so he says) while Mirren doesn't receive the Barbie doll. You'll be wondering who can see whom during summer seventeen.
We Were Liars opens with a map and a family tree, and you'll probably have to consult them frequently as you read. Still, we're pretty sure you'll tear through the book, once you memorize which kids belong to which parents and where their houses are.
