Character Role Analysis

Evie Spooner

Even though she thinks of herself as an unassuming, boring fifteen-year-old at the beginning of the book, Evie is the strongest—and most heroic—character in the book. She manages to keep herself together after the death of her first love, keep her parents out of prison, and seek personal justice and retribution for the Graysons (in giving them back some money that was stolen from Jewish people during the war)—and all in the course of a few weeks. Pretty good for someone who's not even a legal adult yet.

Plus Evie takes center stage in this story, no matter how beautiful her mom might be. She might not feel like it in her day to day life, but for us as readers, she's definitely running the show—you know, on account of how she's the narrator and all.
