The Woman in White Part 1, Section 1, Chapter 14 Summary

  • Walter fills Marian in on his encounter with Anne.
  • He also hands in his resignation to Mr. Fairlie, who is none too pleased about it.
  • Walter knows he has to leave because of his feelings for Laura. It's the noble thing to do, and he is a Victorian Gentleman.
  • (C'mon: stay and duke it out with Sir Percival, Walter!)
  • Anyway, Marian goes to Todd's Corner but is dismayed to discover that Anne fell ill and that she and Mrs. Clements left abruptly that morning.
  • Marian promises to look out for Laura after Walter leaves and do her best to stop the wedding.
