Character Role Analysis

Toto

Toto, a little black dog, is always, always by Dorothy's side. He's not a very effective guard dog, though; mostly he just barks and keeps her company. He's also a little irresponsible. Chasing after Toto gets Dorothy into trouble more than once. In fact, the dog is the reason why she didn't make it into the storm cellar at the beginning of the book, as well as why she missed her hot-air balloon ride with the wizard at the end. Bad dog! But really, good dog—because he helps to keep Dorothy smiling and hopeful even in the toughest of times.

The Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Lion

A road trip is always more fun when your friends are there to help you pass the time (or defeat violent magical creatures, as the case may be.) Dorothy meets the Scarecrow, the tin man, and the Lion for the first time during her journey down the yellow brick road, and they form a quick bond. Whether it's setting off on a (seemingly) doomed quest to kill a wicked witch or accompanying Dorothy on her treacherous journey to the south, these guys have many opportunities to demonstrate their friendship and loyalty. And Dorothy, for her part, loves them right back; though she's ultimately happy to return to Kansas, she's sad as anything to leave her new besties behind.
