The Good Witch of the North

Dorothy and her friends receive a lot of help along the way to the Emerald City. But the person who helps Dorothy first and most is the Witch of the North, who assures her "I will use all the magic arts I know of to keep you from harm.... I will give you my kiss, and no one will dare injure a person who has been kissed by the Witch of the North" (2.56; 2.58). It works, too. When Dorothy is captured by the Winged Monkeys, they won't harm her because of that special smooch.
