- Pearl's phone is dying as she heads out to the woods.
- She goes to where Amiel lives and notices that someone has painted in red that he's next (meaning someone has turned him in to immigration and he'll be deported soon).
- She turns her phone off to save the battery.
- Then she calls out for Amiel. Finally she sees him, and he's fine. Phew.
- She tries urgently to tell him they have to go, but he's not listening.
- Amiel tells her that the cops are surrounding the area and deporting anyone they find who is undocumented—so if he flees, he will get sent back to Mexico.
- Pearl can't believe it: There's a fire, so if he stays, he will die.
- She turns on her phone and hears a bunch of messages from her mom, panicked and freaking out about where Pearl is.
- When she calls her mom, Pearl tells her that she had to check on someone and she's fine.
- Her mom is confused and concerned. What the heck is Pearl still doing in Fallbrook? She wants her daughter to get out of there—now.
- Pearl doesn't listen, though, and tells her mom she'll call as soon as she can. Then she hangs up.
