Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR): Articles 1-2: Basic Rights Summary

What Makes a Man, Mr. Lebowski?

  • Article 1: everybody everywhere is born "free and equal" (1.1).
  • Everybody everywhere has "reason and conscience" (1.2). It may not be evident past midnight on Saturdays, but it's true.
  • Everyone should treat each other like family. Unless your family can't stand each other, that is.
  • Article 2: the UDHR applies to everyone in the world, regardless of their identity (like race, sex, religion, etc.).
  • Finally, human rights apply to you regardless of your country's political status. If you live in a country that's been conquered by an imperialist power, you still have human rights. Hear that, colonial overlords?
