Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR): Articles 28-30: Duties to the Community Summary

It Takes a Village

  • Article 28: everyone has the right to live in a society in which the values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are observed. In other words, all the governments of the world have a duty to pursue these values.
  • Article 29: "everyone has duties to the community" (29.1) Only by fulfilling your role as a member of the community can you be truly free and truly yourself. No one is an island. Except maybe J. D. Salinger.
  • The law can only restrict your rights and freedoms insofar as it protects other people's rights and freedoms.
  • The underlying goal of the law is to promote morality, order, and the welfare of society.
  • No rights or freedoms can be used in a way that goes against the values that the U.N. is laying out right here.
  • Article 30: nothing in the UDHR can be interpreted to give any group or person permission to violate anybody's rights or freedoms. No twisting our words.
