The History of Luck (Jude, Age 16)
- Jude wakes up. Noah's nowhere in sight. Guess they'll have to talk later.
- She heads to Guillermo's studio. She takes her sketchpad, where she's been drawing the sculpture she wants to make of her mother.
- Looking at her drawings, Guillermo realizes that Dianna is Jude's mom. He's freaking out. He says he won't mentor her anymore, but doesn't explain why.
- Jude is stunned. She turns to leave, and something catches her eye. It's Noah, who's on the fire escape.
- Oscar's here, too. So now everyone knows what's going on except for Jude. Sorry, Jude.
- Noah comes in the window.
- Noah accuses Guillermo of killing his mother. Oscar defends Guillermo.
- Noah confesses that his mother was going to divorce his dad so she could be with Guillermo.
- Jude realizes that her mom is the person in Guillermo's love letters. Yeah, it's a lot to take in.
- She stumbles out of the studio. She's furious at her mother for committing adultery.
- Noah's behavior is thrown into a new light. He was protecting her from the truth. (Does that make it okay? Hmm.)
- Noah follows Jude. He says that their mother dying was his fault. He just blamed it on Guillermo to make himself feel better.
- Jude's heartbroken. She's letting herself feel all the grief she's been holding back in the years since her mom died.
- Noah and Jude are walking and talking. That's right: secret-spilling time.
- Noah tells Jude that their mom caught him and Brian.
- Jude tells Noah that Brian's out of the closet, and at Stanford. Evidently Noah never thought to Google his long lost love. What century is it, Noah?
- Jude confesses that she never mailed Noah's application to art school. He's so happy. He thought he didn't get in because he sucks as an artist.
- Noah leads Jude to a quiet area where he's been spray painting a mural. She's impressed.
- She tells him she wants to give him her spot at art school. Noah doesn't want it. Jude's stumped. Why isn't he mad at her?
- Noah admits that he hasn't been perfect, either. He deleted those pictures of Jude's sand sculptures. And he sort of hogged their mother's attention before she died.
- Jude thinks about what her mother did. On one hand, she understands. On the other, she's really mad about it.
- Jude thinks Noah has to tell their dad everything. Conveniently, Dad walks in the room at just that moment.
- Flash past the awkward conversation itself. Noah and Dad are making dinner. Jude's dreaming about a new art project.
- Apparently Dad took the news about his dead wife's affair in stride. Things make more sense now that he knows.
- Also, he wants them to sell their house and live on a boat? Seems random, but okay.
- Jude also told her dad about Noah's art school application. He forgives her.
- Oh gosh, here's Oscar. Jude's dad is not impressed.
- Oscar wants to talk. Uh-oh.
- Jude knows from the get-go this is a goodbye. She steels herself for it.
- Oscar tells her about her mother and Guillermo. He and Jude's mom were good friends, turns out. They used to hang out in the church where Oscar and Jude met.
- Oscar explains that their age difference is bugging him. Jude is three years younger—technically a minor.
- Jude isn't having it. She says she's not giving up on them so easily.
- Good speech: now Oscar's kissing her. Guess that's that.
- Noah and Jude are back at Guillermo's studio. They let themselves in, and guess what? Guillermo's been cleaning up the place.
- Here's Guillermo. He has something to show Jude. Oh, it's pictures of her sand sculptures.
- Jude realizes that Guillermo submitted the photos as part of her art school admissions folder. He says Jude's mother was going to do it, so he carried out her wish. That's nice.
- Noah goes off to paint. Guillermo's impressed with his work. G tells Jude that he wants to continue working with her.
- Guillermo says he thinks Jude's mom broke her sculptures so she'd find him. Jude thinks so, too.
- Jude returns the book she stole from Guillermo. That's also nice.
- A few weeks later, Jude and her dad are hanging out outside.
- Noah's been sending Brian drawings over email. Brian finally responded that he'd meet Noah at their spot in the woods.
- In other good news, Noah got accepted into art school. He's not sure that he's going to attend, though.
- Here's Brian and Noah, emerging from the forest holding hands. Aw.
