Slam Chapter 10 Summary

  • When Sam's mom tells his dad, he laughs. We're serious—he thinks it's hilarious that his son knocked up a girl while they're both sixteen.
  • Everyone at school finds out and most people avoid the topic all together.
  • Sam and Alicia go to the hospital to get an ultrasound and everything is normal between them; they even make out after the scan.
  • He tells us that things changed between them when they found out they were having a baby. They got back together after all, and it meant a lot to Sam that Alicia stood up for him in front of her parents.
  • Sam knows the chances of them staying together long term are slim to none. Most people split up from some reason or another and they haven't even been together very long.
  • Still, Alicia and Sam start hanging out regularly. She's reading everything she can about what to expect when she's expecting, and she teaches Sam all about it.
  • Andrea signs them up for NCT classes to prepare for childbirth, but when they get there, everyone is much older than them. Sam even notices a teacher from his school in the class.
  • It's here that Sam meets Giles (who he saw in the future).
  • The teacher asks them to make a list of what they expect from parenthood, and it's a laundry list of emotions: anxiety, fatigue, love, satisfaction, are among them.
  • After the class, Sam goes home to find his mom and Mark watching TV. They turn it off as soon as he comes in because they have something to tell him.
  • Sam figures that this is the big announcement about their pregnancy, since it's about the time he calculated—based on his best guess from his time in the future.
  • No, it's nothing like that, his mom assures him. She and Mark want to move in together, and they wanted to run it by Sam first.
  • At first Sam's not so sure he wants to live with someone he barely knows, but he doesn't raise any objections.
  • He thinks about it later on and remembers he lives with Alicia and her family in the future, so he ends up living with a bunch of strangers anyway.
