Slam Chapter 6 Summary

  • When Sam wakes up, he's in the future. He's not sure how long in the future, but he knows he's made a jump.
  • He knows he's in Alicia's room because she's in the bed next to him. When she nudges him to get up, Sam has no clue what she's talking about.
  • Obviously, this makes Alicia annoyed. She wants him to change the baby's diaper, and Sam's acting like he's never done it before. (Uh, that's because he hasn't. At least, Sam from the present hasn't, but Sam in the future does it all the time.)
  • Sam takes a cue from Alicia's tone and jumps out of bed to get the baby. It's a boy. He realizes that Alicia looks a lot older and chunkier, and he doesn't like it very much. Yep, having a baby can do that to a body.
  • As he picks up the baby, he holds his nose so he doesn't have to smell any poop or anything gross.
  • Once the baby stops crying, Sam heads to bed.
  • When he wakes up this time, Alicia reports that Roof did well in the night. Sam figures that must be their baby's name, and he wonders why anyone would ever call a baby that. He hopes he misheard Alicia.
  • She asks him if he's heading to college, and he reports that he is, even though (1) he doesn't know which college he attends in the future, and (2) he's not sure how to get there.
  • Secretly wishing someone would fill him in on the details, Sam tries to fish around, but it's too awkward. He can't draw attention to the fact that he has no clue how he got there.
  • After he leaves, Sam heads over to where he used to skateboard to see if he's been there recently.
  • There, he meets up with Rabbit, who claims he hasn't seen Sam in a while. Sam's not sure what that means exactly in terms of time, but Rabbit knows Sam has a kid, so it can't have been too long.
  • He let's Rabbit in on a secret: He's time-traveled forward a year and doesn't know much about his life. Of course, Rabbit doesn't get what he's saying.
  • It's about lunchtime, so Sam goes to McDonalds to grab a burger. He guesses it's still cheap in the future.
  • It turns out it's also a favorite of some girl who seems to know him. She comes up to him and asks how Roof is doing, and they chitchat for a while. She has a baby, too.
  • Sam knows it might be weird to ask this, but he wants to see her change a diaper. After all, he's got to do it for Roof and isn't sure how. It's not like he can go around asking since everyone thinks he already knows what's going on.
  • He follows her to the restroom and watches her change her kid's diaper. She thinks it's a little bizarre, but doesn't mind teaching him.
  • When he gets back to Alicia's place, his mom is there waiting for him with Roof. They talk for a little while, and she asks him about his so-called trouble.
  • He's not sure what on earth she's talking about, but he plays along by claiming he doesn't want to talk about it.
  • That's when he notices that his mom is pregnant. He's surprised, to say the least.
  • Later on, he runs into some guy named Giles from class. Again, Sam is left out of the loop in his own life—he's not sure which class, but pretends to know the guy.
  • They catch up about their kids. It turns out Giles's wife has been depressed since the baby was born. Sam isn't sure what to say to that, so he recommends that Giles write in to a women's magazine for help. Sure.
  • That night, Alicia feeds Sam and they tell each other about their days. All of a sudden, Roof makes a plughole sound, and Alicia asks Sam to go change him.
  • Luckily, he knows how to now, but he still makes a mess of things.
  • Alicia asks Sam if he still loves her, and he tells her that he does, even though he's not sure.
  • He drifts off to sleep and wakes up in his old bed and time. The only problem is he's not sure he wants to be there either.
