Slam Chapter 8 Summary

  • At 4:00AM, Sam is awoken by Mr. Brady asking for help. Even though Sam doesn't want to go, he has to since he's being paid to help the guy out.
  • He realizes he hates being in an unfamiliar town with people he's never met; he hates being away from home.
  • Sam decides to head home instead of working himself to the bone for nothing.
  • With a knocked up girlfriend and no hope of a future, Sam figured he'd just escape from his life and never have to tell his parents, but he knows that won't work.
  • When he gets home, he's surprised to find a police car and officers at his house.
  • His mom is understandably upset when he gets there, and she starts yelling questions at him at a rapid rate. She's all, "Why did you run away? What were you thinking? Why Hastings?"
  • It becomes clear that Alicia hadn't spoken to Sam's mom yet, which makes things even worse.
  • When he decided to come home, Sam was kind of hoping he wouldn't have to tell anyone the news and that everybody would be so relieved he's safe that it wouldn't be a big deal that Alicia has a bun in the oven.
  • So Sam lies: He claims he ran away because of his parents' divorce.
  • Even though it happened years ago, he bets his mom will be guilty enough to buy it.
  • Luckily for him, it works. Unluckily for him, it backfires when his mom says they need to go talk to a counselor about it.
  • His mom promises him they'll sort it out, and she doesn't seem mad at him for running away anymore. Phew.
  • She heads off to work, and he goes skateboarding.
  • Sam sees Rabbit there, and they practice a few tricks together.
  • It's only at the end of the day that Sam realizes he doesn't even know for sure if Alicia is pregnant. He supposes he could have called to check in or something.
  • Here's the thing: Sam doesn't want to call Alicia because that would make it all real. He wants to enjoy his kid-less freedom for a little while longer.
