Slam Chapter 2 Summary

  • Sam tells us a little bit more about his family. His mom got pregnant with him when she was sixteen, which he didn't realize until recently when all his buddies started talking about how hot his mom was. Ew.
  • Even though Sam doesn't mind his mom being young, he's starting to realize it's not the most normal thing in the world.
  • His parents have been divorced for a while, and he doesn't see his dad very often, but he's still around.
  • Sam thinks everyone in his family is a screw-up. Neither of his parents went to college or made a bunch of money, probably because they had a kid so young.
  • Not Sam, though—he wants to do something with his life and make something of himself before it's too late.
  • Later, his mom went back to school to get a degree and now works at the council office.
  • That's where she met Alicia (Sam's crush, we take it) and her mom.
  • Alicia's mom is a councilor (translation: congresswoman) and invites Sam's mom to her birthday party.
  • When Sam's mom says he should come along to meet Alicia, Sam's not so sure. Getting fixed up by your mom? Not so cool.
  • Even though he wants to prove his mom's wrong about his taste in girls, he can't help but get interested when he meets Alicia. She's gorgeous.
  • The only problem? She knows it. Sam introduces himself, and Alicia immediately calls him out for staring at her. Busted.
  • Not one to let things go easily, Alicia gives him a hard time about it, too. At first Sam is happy to joke around, but pretty soon he gets tired of it and tells Alicia to get lost.
  • He knows she's way out of his league, but she doesn't have to be rude to him about it.
  • Sam walks away to go find his mom so they can leave. He finds her flirting with some guy, completely disinterested in leaving the party.
  • Meanwhile, Alicia starts looking for Sam and apologizes once she catches up with him. She's not normally this bratty; she just broke up with her boyfriend and isn't in the mood to be festive.
  • Sam decides to cut her some slack, especially when she shares that her boyfriend pressured her into having sex but she wouldn't give up the v-card.
  • Alicia hints that she's not against sex per say, she just wasn't ready yet.
  • Hearing all this, Sam wonders whether she might be ready to knock boots with him at some point, but then tries to bring himself back to the present moment. It turns out he's never gone all the way either, although he's come pretty close.
  • When Alicia asks Sam if he wants to see her room (wink, wink), he's really confused. Didn't she just say she wasn't ready for sex? Why would she invite him upstairs to her room?
  • Sam shouldn't have worried so much. Once they get to her room, they watch a movie together, that's it.
  • They decide to meet up at the movies tomorrow and then say goodbye.
  • Later, Sam goes skateboarding with his friend Rabbit and tells him about his crush on Alicia. He likes hanging out with Rabbit, but he's no TH, so Sam decides to tell TH his troubles instead.
  • He meets up with Alicia to go to the movie, but when they get there, they decide to go to Starbucks instead and just end up shooting the breeze.
  • Sam confides in her that he wants to go to college even though no one in his family's gone before.
  • Alicia, on the other hand, isn't interested in hitting the books. She wants to become a model, but knows her parents won't like it; she hasn't worked up the courage to tell them yet.
  • That night, Alicia and Sam sleep together. She steals a condom from her parents' bedroom since Sam doesn't have one, even though her last boyfriend always had one with him.
  • He's in the mood and ready to go, but then Sam starts to get freaked out. He's not sure he wants to go through with it, so they stop kissing and talk for a few minutes.
  • The million-dollar question? Why is Alicia ready to go to town with him when they met yesterday, but she broke up with her boyfriend because he wanted to? It just doesn't make sense to Sam.
  • Alicia explains that she likes Sam and feels ready now. Sam's not sure why that is, but he goes along with it.
  • At home that night, Sam tells TH that he and Alicia had sex, but he doesn't tell anybody else.
