The Art of Fielding Chapter 38 Summary

How It All Goes Down

  • "Owen hadn't come" (38.1), we're told, and this worries Guert because Owen had never "come this late before" (38.2). Guert normally gets him to visit much sooner.
  • Guert checks the baseball schedule, but Owen doesn't have a game. There's no reason he shouldn't be arriving right that very minute.
  • He wonders if it's because of a conversation they had yesterday, when Owen looked at old yearbooks, found a younger picture of Guert (did he go by Guertie in his youth?) and said, "I wish I'd known you then" (38.19).
  • As he leaves his apartment, he walks right into a wet man on his doorstep. It's not a dripping Owen, it's Pella's husband, David.
