The Art of Fielding Chapter 9 Summary

How It All Goes Down

  • Henry can't believe he threw the ball so recklessly, and he knows Owen is dead.
  • Everyone—even college president Guert Affenlight—rushes the field and Owen is carried away.
  • Schwartz lets Henry know that Owen is fine in the hospital, and they go visit him after the game.
  • Guert Affenlight is already at the hospital, having ridden in the ambulance with Owen, and Coach Cox shows up shortly after with fast food for everyone.
  • Henry offers Affenlight a fry. He takes one, and starts thinking for an entire page about how he used to smoke and his family has a history of heart disease, which is either a terrible McDonald's ad campaign or really obvious foreshadowing.
  • Affenlight ponders how he's always "avoided entanglements with students" (9.54) and especially male students, but he can't get his mind off Owen.
  • Henry, meanwhile, is worried that it's all his fault, with his bad throw. At least the doctor tells him that Owen is okay and that Henry can visit him tomorrow.
  • While everyone is worrying privately, Affenlight's phone rings. It's his daughter, Pella. He's been so busy lusting after a male student that he forgot to pick her up at the airport. He'll be late.
