Courage doesn't come easy. Just ask Mow-Mow. With his beat-up, one-eyed face, he really gets punished for acting on the convictions of his beliefs. Other characters, however, seem to be able to fight for what they need without getting a boat hook in the neck.
For Tommo, courage can only come when all his comforts are taken from him—from his comrade Toby, to his physical health, and finally his sense of security. On the other hand, for the Typee courage seems to come from a different source, something having to do with faith and community and duty.
