Chapter 11
- The phrenological head is up and working—it really does look like Mickle is summoning a ghost, and the audience loves it and asks Mickle serious questions, to which she gives vague responses so they can interpret them however they want. Las Bombas is thrilled at the money they make, but Theo isn't impressed by the fake-out—LB reminds him that it was his idea to begin with.
- Mickle loves doing the job, and she and Theo talk behind everyone else's backs using her secret sign language.
- Theo hopes the novelty of the Oracle Priestess jig will be up soon. No luck, and he has a ton of guilt on his conscience. Las Bombas says no one takes it seriously though, and that people just like the entertainment.
- There's one occasion, however, when Theo thinks the scheme has gone way too far. A man and woman scraped together their last pennies to come to the gig—they look like simple country folk in mourning for their daughter. They ask Mickle how their deceased child is doing in the afterlife, and Mickle says their kid is happy. They sincerely believe in the deceit, Theo claims, and this is too much—they're officially taking advantage of people now.
- Theo lashes out at Mickle and says she doesn't know the difference between right and wrong. He wounds her and she runs off, but Las Bombas refuses to change the act. Theo thinks he's gone too far with the troupe—he likes the group and all, but he can't sacrifice his conscience anymore. He has to leave—but he can't take Mickle with him because, if she got caught with a fugitive like him, bad things might happen to her—so he does the "honorable" thing and just bounces.
- His conscience is clean, though he feels really stinky.
